Seeding a lawn in Colorado

When over seeding a lawn in this area it requires a little planning for your seed to successfully produce. If the seed doesn't produce you're only wasting your time, energy and money.
First decide what type of grass seed will blend most effectively with your existing lawn. Due to our dry weather conditions I prefer a blend of Kentucky Blue Grass with a mix of Fine Fescues and Perennial Rye Grass. The blue grass gives the lawn a darker color, the fescue adds durability, requiring less water and the rye grass adds thickness to the lawn.
Water the lawn well the night before to help soften the soil.
Aerate the lawn before seeding to loosen the soil and create openings for the seed to fall into below the surface of the ground. Please note that not all of the seeds will fall into these holes which is fine. By aerating you not only breakup the ground but will increase drainage and help the existing lawn to thicken on its own by pruning the root system.
Apply a good application of granular Revive to the lawn. The Revive helps to increase the grounds absorbency as well as adding much needed micro nurtients and iron to the soil.
Apply the seed with a disc spreader and over seed the entire lawn to give it uniformity.
Water daily for 10 days and then return to your normal watering schedule. Inform your water company that you have reseeded and get a permit so that you will not be  unnecessarily fined for watering on restricted days. Remember that you are building a new lawn and should not expect immediate results. Grass like all plants takes time and nurturing to grow.

Spring aeration

In Colorado a spring aeration is one of the most important services that you as a homeowner can do for your lawn. The composition of Colorado soil can have many detrimental effects on our lawns. Colorado soil contains an overabundance of clay which during the winter months hardens and dramatically increases soil compaction. This condition chokes the lawn's root system, restricts the flow of badly needed water and prevents nutrients from being absorbed into the soil. By aerating the lawn the root system is allowed to breathe, roots develop normally, water drainage is vastly improved and micro nutrients are absorbed into the plant. All of these combined are the start of a beautiful and healthy lawn.

According to the Colorado State University Extension Agency studies; in order to maintain a healthy lawn it is recommended to aerate once in the spring and again in the fall. During the summer months the same adverse soil conditions develop which cause hazards to the lawn's root system while in the winter dormancy.

An inexpensive service such as an aeration can you save you hundreds of dollars in lawn repairs.
